After the Woods centers on the reunion of a young man and woman after a separation of 1000 years. Willed into existence by a conscious landscape that has rediscovered the code embedded within it, the man becomes a Knight adorned in armor while the woman is transformed into a Princess who over time evolves into a spaceship. While her metamorphosis represents the advancement of artificial intelligence his transformation triggers the evolution and expansion of the natural landscape. The Knight’s quest for the Princess leads him towards a realization and releasing code, disseminating consciousness like a form of alchemy throughout his immediate environment. The forest grows and becomes populated by fantastical creatures creating a new magical eco-system through which technology and nature are combined.
All drawings are 2003 to present day, ink, gouache, watercolor on paper, sizes vary from 80 - 240 inches in width, 16 - 32” in height.
After the Woods is a tale of separation, communication, reunion, and fated evolution. Polygone and Versus, two lovers torn apart upon conceiving a child are transported to an alternate reality and universe. Through space-time, Polygone is transfigured from Renaissance princess into a spaceship, representing advancements of technological intelligence. Versus is a knight in armor transforming to oak tree, indicating his ability to attract and affect the natural order, including speeding evolutionary growth in plant life to absurd proportions. The forest they inhabit develops adaptations informed by folklore, myth, and scientific speculation. In this fantastical reality and encoded labyrinth, Nature gains access to human archives. The ultimate fate of Polygone and Versus is to dissolve and merge as one environment, giving birth to Polyverse. All of my artwork stems from this story, which I have been developing and presenting as a continuum of interwoven chapters since 2001.
